Australia is the land of long golden beaches and sunset’s that last for hours. The beaches around Sydney don’t disappoint when it comes to satisfying the itch to explore. If you have time to take a day or weekend trip outside of the city during your visit you can find some of the best beaches in Sydney a couple of hours north.
Central Coast is a beautiful area two hours drive north of Sydney. It has a collection of quiet seaside towns, long golden beaches and beautiful rugged coastline. We recently went on a road trip north and wanted to share some of the things to do at the best beaches in Sydney with you.
This tiny unassuming shed on the beach front in Ettalong doesn’t look like much but it gives you one of the best local things to do at the beach. The boatshed has boats for hire which you can take out by yourself and explore the massive inlet/harbour.
You can hire anything from a small dingy up to 16 foot boats with cabins and boats equip with BBQ’s. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon on the water. We hired a sixteen footer for a group of four (plus two dogs who could come along too) and spent a couple of hours out on the water. The area looks even more beautiful from the water.
You’ll also be able to hire fishing gear if you want to. Explore further to find some of Sydney’s best kept secret beaches in and around the area. You can find out more about Anderson’s Boatshed here.
The markets in Ettalong run parallel to the beach front and are just another reason why the area has some of the best beaches in Sydney. The small town vibe is so relaxed that you can easily enjoy an afternoon sipping coffee and flipping through the second hand book store.
The markets are set up with a early 1900’s theme, decor and styling. You’ll find a lot of locally made, one of a kind items here. I was lucky enough to pick up a first edition James Bond novel going cheap. You can find more information about the markets here.
Woy Woy Seafood
Like seafood? The markets in Woy Woy are a must see. These quiet small town markets make amazingly fresh seafood and fish and chips. You can tell by the fact they are busy with tourists all weekend and still busy with locals during the weekdays that they are good.
Stop by here for fresh oysters, swordfish and a stroll along the esplanade to see the local pelicans.
Most definitely earning its place in any list of the best beaches in Sydney is Pearl Beach. Just a short drive from Ettalong is this stunning crescent shaped, golden sanded paradise. Out of all the beaches I’ve been to in Sydney this one truly is the quintessential Australian beach.
Relax in the sun or grab coffee at the local kiosk. You’ll find some fantastic festivals for classical music and jazz in the area during summer too.
