Sydney is a great city to visit with family. The city is full of family friend things to do during your visit. Whether it’s hanging out with Kangaroo’s and visiting local eat street’s there are plenty of family friendly things to do in Sydney. Below are five of the best places in Sydney to spend an afternoon with the family while you are in town.
When I first arrived in Sydney everyone told me to go to Taronga Zoo. I have an aversion to ‘famous tourist spots’ so I was a bit dubious. When I was finally convinced to go to Taronga Zoo I swore never to dismiss it as a great place to go.
You can catch the ferry from Circular Quay and buy an entrance ticket all at once. The ferry ride to the Zoo takes in an amazing view of the city to start with. Arriving at the Zoo’s wharf the area truly looks like you are arriving at Jurassic Park. The jungle-like trees overhanging the deep emerald water really makes you feel like your stepping off onto a different world.
You need to take a gondola ride from the wharf up to the entrance which takes in an breathtaking view of the city and harbour. Once you arrive you’ll realise just how massive the Zoo is. Take your time and set aside at least half if not a whole day to see Taronga Zoo. This place is truly one of the most family friendly things to do in Sydney.
Paddy’s Markets are touristy, and they won’t apologise for that. They are simply a great place in the city to stop by and shop for all of your souvenirs before you head home.
Head into Paddy’s Markets expecting to carry a lot of bags out. Cheap sunglasses, clothes, make up and souvenirs are wall to wall in the shopping stalls here. Take some cash as give haggling a try!
It wasn’t until I starting travelling the world a lot that I realised how blessed countries such as Australia are to be so multicultural. One of the best family friendly things to do in Sydney is to take a trip down the eat streets in the city.
Thai Town, in the Haymarket area of the CBD, has some of the best Thai restaurants outside of Thailand. My personal favourite is Chat Thai, check it out.
Sydney Tower Eye
The Sydney Tower Eye is the centre piece of Sydney’s skyline. Topping out at 305m tall it is Sydney’s tallest building and the second tallest in the southern hemisphere. The biggest draw card is the Skywalk Tour (if you’re brave enough) where you can take an outside view over the entire city. If you’re looking for something a little more inline with family friendly things to do in Sydney you can book dinner in the restaurant at the top of the tower.
Luna Park is a very cool little retro theme park. The park comes with the feeling of Coney Island (literally they have a ride called Coney Island). It’s a great family friendly thing to do in Sydney.
Sitting at the base of the Harbour Bridge opposite the Opera House it also takes in an amazing view of the city.
How to get there? You can walk from the CBD over the Harbour Bridge to get to Luna Park. I highly recommend doing this as it’s an amazing view as you walk over the bridge.
Sydney is a great family friendly destination. I personally still have great memories of visiting the city as kid. I’m really pleased to see that the city still has a lot of great places for families to visit.
