Bangkok is a not often thought of as a river city. When you think of Bangkok the bright lights, tuk tuks and market places come to mind well before the river. But the entire city is based around this beautiful river and some of the best things to do on Bangkok’s riverside are must do’s in this city. Take a river cruise, see the historical temples and explore. Here is our list of the 5 best riverside attractions in Bangkok.
The Temple of the Reclining Buddha is home to one of the worlds largest reclining Buddha’s. It’s a very spiritual place for the local Thai people. Located behind the Temple of the Emerald Buddha this is one temple that is on the list of best things to do on Bangkok’s riverside for a reason.
Sitting at a grand length of 46m long and covered from head to toe with gold leaf the Buddha is truly a sight to behold. You’ll see a lot of local people here bowing and praying. The temple itself is beautiful and I highly recommend stopping by.
Sky Bar at Lebua State Tower
Towering 63 stories above the city the famous Sky Bar takes in one of, if not the best view of the entire city. You’ll get uninterrupted views of the river and the entire city from up here. Although you’ll pay a high price for the view I can guarantee you that it’s highly worth the elevator ride and the expensive cocktail prices.
Take a River Cruise in Bangkok
Okay, so not technically on the ‘riverside’ taking a cruise of Bangkok definitely belongs on the list of the best things to do on Bangkok’s riverside. There are several places that you can take a long tail boat from to explore the river. If you’d like a local guide to give you a Bangkok guided tour we highly recommend a Verramente Bangkok city guide.
Muay Thai Live Show at Asiatique
Asiatique is a massive shopping mall on the waterfront of the Bangkok’s river. The shopping mall itself is a great place to explore, shop and hangout. You’ll find a lot of great Bangkok fashion here. But one thing I’d highly recommend is the Muay Thai Live Show that runs every evening from 20:00. It’s quite the show.
The temple of Wat Kalayanamit is not very well known by tourists and is often not on the usual tourist map. Despite this the huge temple and complex is well worth a visit. You’ll have plenty of room to move about and get a more authentic experience compared to the temples dominated by tourists. You can get there by taking the ferry.
Have a great trip to Bangkok, enjoy this amazing city and all it has to offer.
